Safe OperationEssential Git Workflow Mental Models
1. Soft vs Hard Resets
git reset --soft HEAD~1 rewinds the commit pointer but leaves your changes fully intact in the staging area. Never use --hard unless you intend to permanently discard uncommitted files.
2. The Safety of git reflog
Git rarely deletes data immediately. Even if you accidentally rebase or reset away commits, running git reflog lets you view every commit pointer position from the last 30 days and restore it in seconds.
3. Clean Remote Pruning
When team members delete merged feature branches on GitHub/GitLab, your local tracking branches remain stale. Running git fetch -p cleanly purges obsolete references from your local machine.
