The Advanced RAG Architecture Guide: Semantic Chunking, Cross-Encoder Reranking & Context Compression
Naive RAG ("split into 500 characters, embed with OpenAI, take top-k=5") fails in mission-critical enterprise environments. To reach 99%+ factual precision, production systems implement multi-stage retrieval pipelines. Here is the complete architectural standard.

β‘ The RAG Triad: Hallucination Defense Pillars
Did your vector search and reranker retrieve only relevant paragraphs, or did they inject noise that distracts the LLM?
Is every single claim, number, and conclusion in the final generated answer mathematically provable from the retrieved text?
Did the model directly solve the user's specific inquiry without drifting off into tangential document summaries?
1. The Two-Stage Retrieval Funnel (Bi-Encoder + Cross-Encoder)
Vector similarity search (cosine distance on embeddings) is fast but mathematically lossy. It computes document vectors independently of the query.
Production architectures solve this with a Two-Stage Funnel:
- Stage 1 (High Recall): Retrieve top-50 candidate chunks using hybrid dense vector search (pgvector) + BM25 sparse keyword matching.
- Stage 2 (High Precision): Pass those 50 candidates through a dedicated Cross-Encoder Reranker (such as Cohere Rerank v3 or BGE-Reranker-Large) which computes full cross-attention between query and chunk tokens.
- Stage 3 (Context Compression): Select the top-5 reranked chunks and strip irrelevant sentences before prompt injection.
2. Zero-Hallucination Production Prompt Contract
To stop models from extrapolating when the retrieved context lacks an answer, enforce this strict citation-grounded system directive:
<system_instructions> You are a Factual RAG Synthesis Engine. You answer user questions STRICTLY using the verified excerpts in <retrieved_context>. RULES: 1. Every factual statement must cite its exact source chunk: [Source: chunk_id]. 2. If the answer cannot be completely derived from the provided context, state: "The provided documentation does not contain sufficient information to verify this answer." 3. Never use external pre-training knowledge to fill in missing details. 4. Output your reasoning inside <fact_verification> before emitting the final answer. </system_instructions>
